As a member of the Sanders movement, taking Jessica Valenti’s suggestion to not make this about political convenience, I think we should be asking a much broader-by-gender spectrum of Democratic leaders their thoughts about Tara Reade’s allegations of rape against Joe Biden.
It is shameful that we only have questioned and know what Warren, Gabbard, Klobuchar, Pelosi, Abrams etc. think about this issue, and have not held Sanders to this same line of questioning. It is true that Biden is playing identity politics by restricting his VP choice to be a woman without disclosing or discussing any of his other criteria (Sarah Palin, Kellyanne Conway, Meghan McCain, Phyllis Schlafly … etc. are also women) and that Bernie Sanders refused to play this silly game. However, Biden and the DNC seemingly have promised some involvement from Sanders team members in crafting the platform or policy, and Sanders does after all have the delegates and support of the second largest percentage by a yuuuge margin of Democratic primary voters. It is at least as important to know Sanders’ thoughts on this specific issue as it is to know those of all the women putative VP candidates.
In terms of influence, I want to know what Tom Perez, Cory Booker, Andrew Cuomo, Gavin Newsom and other determinants of the Democratic party’s policy and platform think about Reade/Biden.
