I find it quite telling that in apartheid South Africa, M. K. Gandhi (he wasn't yet Mahatma) fought for the second class (Indians) to be treated a bit more first class, not for the Black Africans to be treated as humans.

Although not governmentally sanctioned in the US, as in the formerly apartheid South African 400-year-old example, there are black, brown, red and yellow people who are unofficially granted the status of “Honorary Whites,” and thus allowed and encouraged to participate in the exploitation, degradation, and dehumanization of their own people).
