Is google measuring true cultural trends or just artefacts of a positive feedback mechanism acting on randomly occurring outliers and causing early exponential relative growth (going viral) until saturation? After all, this is what social media “experts” use to create buzz.

Google doesn’t have a baseline (or may be they do) for the increase in trend measurements for auto-completion or suggestion of random terms.

For example, if for “celebrity name” they had randomly assigned (50–50% because with the positive feedback the effects are non-linear) auto-complete suggestions “net worth” as well as “new pet” (or something better designed to test whatever your specific hypothesis is), then we would have some measure of the trend beyond the feedback effect.

I stop to miau to cats.
