My daughters. They were bothered by it, just as they were by random people (friends or acquaintances, sure) trying to peck their cheeks or pat their heads or whatever. I told them it was totally okay to refuse, that I would handle any awkwardness and defend them if needed, and also to forestall possibly uncomfortable greetings and goodbyes with a proffered handshake.

As for compliments, I told them to always respond with "Thank you, you too!". It stops old men in their tracks, and lights up older women.

I stop to miau to cats.
