This sounds like a joke! But my daughter, who is studying US history, assures me it is true.
There used to be a magazine called SPAN that the USIA distributed, free, by subscription, that spread the same artistic peace loving tolerant propagandist vision of the US. Reading, in the 70s, “to kill a mockingbird” and about the civil Rights movement set me right. When I came to the US in the late 80s, i wasn’t surprised by the racism and war-love I saw in the US, after all, I’d been conscious thru the Nixon administration, but I was astonished that no American had even heard of SPAN.
